A fully biodegradable material is a plastic whose properties meet the requirements of use, remain unchanged during storage and degrade to an environmentally friendly substance in the natural environment after use. It is therefore also known as an environmentally fully biodegradable material.
The degradation process of degraded materials mainly includes biodegradation, photodegradation and chemical degradation. The degradation processes are mainly synergistic. For example, photodegradation and oxidative degradation often occur simultaneously and contribute to each other; photodegradation is more likely to occur after photodegradation.

PLA is one of the most researched biodegradable materials in China and abroad. It is made by polymerising lactic acid as the main raw material. PLA is a non-polluting, biodegradable product. When the temperature is higher than 55°C or when oxygen enrichment and microbial action are reduced, PLA can be decomposed into carbon dioxide and water by composting, and the material is recycled in nature without any impact on the environment. Currently, polyacrylate ring-opening polymerisation is mainly used in the production of PLA. PLA is prepared by dehydrating lactic acid into oligomers, depolymerising it into propyl esters and then subjecting it to ring-opening polymerisation. PLA also has reliable biosafety, biodegradability, good mechanical properties and is easy to process. The disadvantage of PLA is the relatively harsh degradation conditions. However, PLA is at the forefront of consumption due to its relatively low cost among biodegradable plastics.
