What can straws be made out of?

Drinking straws can be made from a variety of materials, including plastic, paper, metal, and biodegradable materials such as bamboo, corn, and PLA (polylactic acid).

Plastic drinking straws are the most common type and are typically made from petroleum-based plastics such as polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE). These straws are strong and durable, but are not biodegradable and can take hundreds of years to break down in the environment.
